Samberg and Wiig to Leave SNL

Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig will be leaving Saturday Night Live. Samberg and Wiig have both been full-time members of SNL since 2005. At the First Annual Comedy Awards Wigg was named Best Female Comedy Actress. She co-wrote and starred in the 2011 film Bridesmaids, and was nominated for an Emmy, an Oscar, and a Golden Globe for it. She was nominated for 3 Emmys for her performance in SNL. Samberg was nominated for the 2011 Teen Choice Awards for Comedian, and won an Emmy for his preformance on SNL. They both have contributed greatly to Saturday Night Live, and will be missed.

Mubarak Sentenced to Life in Prison

On Saturday, a judge sentenced former President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak to life in prison for the killing of unarmed demonstrators during the first 6 days of protests in February 2011. Mubarak had been in command of Egypt for over 30 years. Mubarak was responsible for the deaths of protesters during the Arab Spring. He was ousted on February 11th 2011 after 18 days of demonstrations. Many had hoped for the death penalty, but are relieved that Mubarak has been brought to justice.  

President Obama Gets Engaged In Memorial Day

     President Obama is paying tribute to our nations fallen fighters on Memorial Day. He is attending and participating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown at Arlington National  Cemetary. He is also going to honor those who died in the Vietnam war.

Where Did the Easter Bunny Originate?

In many countries people celebrate at this time of year. It’s when plants start growing again and animals mate and procreate. The Saxons believed in a goddess named "Eastre" and they celebrated her at this time because she was the goddess of fertility. Hares and rabbits were considered sacred to Eastre because they are notoriously fertile animals.

Christian missionaries tried to convert northern European tribes to Christianity. To help make Christianity more attractive they turned the Saxon’s and many other people’s spring celebration into a Christian holiday. The holiday, celebrating the resurrection of Christ was also close to the Eastre celebration. That’s how our current Easter celebration evolved to include the Easter bunny.

The Hunger Games

  The long awaited dystopian futuristic movie The Hunger Games enters theaters tonight at midnight. The movie, based on the first of three books by Suzanne Collins has sparked much excitement.
  The Hunger Games is set in a future country called Panem, in the remains of America. It is ruled by a totalitarian government called the Capitol. It rules over the 12 Districts that supply everything from food to coal to the Capitol. The Capitol hosts an annual "Hunger Games", as a reminder to the Districts that the Capitol cannot be defeated. The "Hunger Games" takes one girl and one boy from each District and throws them in a giant area of land called an arena. The story follows 16 year old District 12 citizen Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers for her little sister when she is picked for the Games.
  The movie has gotten great reviews, The Hunger Games promises to be one of, if not the, movie of the year.

School Bus Crash

   On Monday March 12th a school bus crashed right outside of Indianapolis. It struck a bridge support beam. The bus driver and one child were killed and ten were injured. They were headed to Lighthouse Charter School when this happened and they were only two miles away.

Giffords Resigns

  Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced in a video message on Sunday that she is resigning from congress this week. Giffords was shot in the head about a year ago, and stepped down from her seat to recover. She is resigning, so she can focus on her recovery. She is sent in her letter of resignation on Wednesday..
